Throughout the year, members are encouraged to take part in organised activities which are many and varied - for example: Preview Evenings of forthcoming exhibitions, evening lectures by distinguished speakers connected with aviation, visits to aviation collections, workshops and other places of interest and tours of civilian and military aviation locations (many not normally open to the general public).
Friends also assist with organised parties of daytime visitors - amongst them the partially-sighted and disabled - acting as official guides for the general public, and giving explanatory talks to visitor-groups on the basic principles of flight. In addition, Friends frequently assist Museum curatorial staff in the Archives and Library, and work regularly in our own workshop at London within the Aircraft, Vehicle and Marine Restoration teams.
All such help is much sought after, not only by the Society but by the Museum staff with whom we have a very close relationship which has been built up over the years. As a result, the Society of Friends has become an integral part of the Museum and, since its inception, the support and professional aid of the Friends has been substantial.
