Battle Of Britain Lesson Plans For Teachers Launched

Battle of Britain Lesson Plans for Teachers Launched

19 May 2010

The Access and Learning Department of the Royal Air Force Museum has devised two free downloadable lesson packs for teachers who wish to prepare lessons for Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 pupils about the Battle of Britain in the run up to this year’s 70th anniversary.

Ellen Soall, Education Officer, at the Royal Air Force Museum’s London site states:

‘When talking to students about the Battle of Britain it can be easy to only focus on the dates, facts and figures of this tumultuous period of our nation’s history. By exploring primary and secondary sources our aim is to encourage learners to consider what it was really like for the men and women of the Royal Air Force during their ‘Finest Hour’.
In the ‘The Daily Scramble’, Key Stage 2 pupils can learn how the country pulled together in the lead up to the Battle of Britain. Wartime reporters explore the social aspects of conflict and the impact that it had on the nation. The pack will be complemented by a podcast aimed at Key Stage 2 students to be launched later this summer.

Our Key Stage 3 Pack uses extracts from personal letters, diaries and memoirs, to give the personal perspective of the people involved in the Battle.

Both downloadable packs, and linked resources, can be found on the Museum’s website www.battleofbritainbeacon.org/education

The Museum’s Access and Learning Department is able to offer a range of interactive workshops which explore aspects of the Battle of Britain and the Second World War in line with the current curriculum.
