The Hendon Pageant

The Hendon Pageant

19 June - 20 June

The Hendon Pageant is inspired by the Pageants of the interwar period when the RAF would use the Museum's site in Hendon, when it was an RAF base, to showcase the latest developments in aviation technology.

Today the Hendon Pageant offers the public the opportunity to learn more about Hendon's historic past through a series of interactive workshops, tableaux, talks and archive film footage.

We are able to confirm that a Battle of Britain Memorial Flypast of the Flight's Dakota aircraft will take place at the Museum on Sunday 20th June, subject to prevailing weather conditions on the day at 2.55 pm.

On Saturday 19th June the Barnet Band will be giving 2 concerts in the Museum underneath our Lancaster at 12:30pm and 2:30pm; whilst on Sunday the Royal Air Force Association President's Band will entertain the public at 12:30pm and 2:30pm with a series of rousing classics associated with the Battle of Britain, again underneath our Lancaster.(If after listening to the RAF President's Band you would like to purchase one of their albums this can be done by going to their website

For the weekend we will be specially extending the opening hours of the Grahame White Factory until 5:30pm and we will have World War 1 re-enactors located on the Museum's helipad displaying artefacts from the period.

On both the Saturday and the Sunday, members of the Museum’s Department of Research and Information Services will give two talks in the Grahame White Factory on the early history of the RAF Museum’s site and the Edwardian Pageants which took place here before the First World War with the ‘Hendon Habit’ at 12 noon and ‘Pilots and Pageantry: A History of RAF Displays at Hendon' at 2pm.

Children aged 5 and above will have the opportunity to examine World War II escape and invasion aids used by RAF Pilots during the Battle of Britain from the Museum’s Handling Collection. Sessions will run on both Saturday and Sunday in Aeronauts, the Museum’s Interactive Gallery for Children, from 11am to 1pm and from 2pm to 4pm.

In addition to this, our younger female visitors,(5 – 11) will be able to receive a certificate of registration into the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force by reporting to our WAAF Officers located at the Museum’s Main Entrance.

Courtesy of the Friends of the Royal Air Force Museum we will also be showing archive footage of RAF Pilots from 20s and 30s in our Close Brothers Military Theatre. Screenings will be from 11am to 1pm and from 2pm to 4pm.

In addition to this the Museum will be showing its powerful and emotive sound and light show 'Our Finest Hour' in our newly refurbished Battle of Britain Hall on the hour from 1pm to 5pm and will be showcasing it's latest temporary exhibition "Art of the Battle of Britain" in the Hall.

Dads, learn from our Land Army Girls how to milk a cow and then try your hand at doing it; whilst courtesy of Belmont Childrens Farm our younger visitors will be able to view chickens, talk to Sally Anne (the farm's goat) and marvel at Bugsy the Flemish Giant Rabbit.

By popular request IPMS Barnet return to this year's Pageant to display a series of models showing various military aircraft from throughout the RAF’s history in the Museum’s Historic Hangars.
