An announcement is made that the ENBRAER EMB-312 Tucano will be the Royal
Air Force's new basic trainer. It will be built under licence by Shorts
as the S312.
1 May
A Royal Air Force (RAF) Lockheed TriStar transport becomes the first aircraft
to land at the new Falklands Mount Pleasant Airport after a proving flight
from Ascension Island.
12 May
The airfield at Mount Pleasant in the Falkland Islands is opened by Prince
Andrew. However, due to ongoing work by the contractor responsible for
the construction of the station and the need to transfer Royal Air Force
(RAF) units from various locations around the Falkland Islands to the
new complex, the station itself, RAF Mount Pleasant, did not officially
open until 1 May 1986.
15 October
Air Chief Marshal Sir Keith Williamson is promoted to the rank of Marshal
of the Royal Air Force and relinquishes the appointment of Chief of the
Air Staff. He was succeeded by Air Chief Marshal Sir David Craig.
