The Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough is renamed the Royal Aerospace Establishment, Farnborough.

30 June
AHQ Cyprus ceases to operate as an independent formation, its functions being subsumed by Headquarters, British Forces Cyprus.

14 November
Air Chief Marshal Sir David Craig is promoted to the rank of Marshal of the Royal Air Force and succeeded as Chief of the Air Staff by Air Chief Marshal Sir Peter Harding.

9 December
Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir David Craig is appointed to the post of Chief of the Defence Staff.
