First World War

2nd Lt. Kevin Furniss2nd Lt. Kevin Furniss

The personal papers of 2nd Lt. Kevin Furniss were donated to the Museum by his family in 2013. They are displayed along with some of his belongings in the First World War in the Air exhibition at Cosford.

Kevin was a pupil at Wolverhampton Grammar School and later applied to Staffordshire Territorials where he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Staffordshire Yeomanry.

In 1917 Kevin transferred to the Royal Flying Corps (RFC) and on 22 April 1917 he never returned from an offensive patrol mission.

The personal letters below between Kevin and his family give an insight into the personality of this brave young man and his experiences during the First World War.
