Key stage 2

First World War- Life above the Trenches

This workshop will help children to understand how our knowledge of the past is constructed using a range of sources.  Focusing on the life of a Royal Flying Corps (RFC) pilot, the aim of the workshop is to introduce children to the history of the RFC using a range of interactive activities.  Children will have the opportunity to examine WWI artefacts including uniform, maps letters and aircraft in order to build a picture of the life of a pilot. Elements from the collection of local pilot 2nd Lt. Kevin Furniss will be used.

World War II - Spirit of the Blitz

This workshop focuses on an aspect of British history that extends pupils' chronological knowledge - the Blitz and the turning point that was the Battle of Britain in 1940.  Examining the daily life of an ARP warden, pupils will use a range of sources and museum artefacts to develop their depth of knowledge and inspire curiosity.  This first-hand experience of life led in the shadow of the Blitz will help pupils understand some of the complexities of life in Britain during this time.

A presentation followed by a question and answer session with personnel who experienced the Second World War at first hand.

The Science of Forces & Motion

This workshop is aimed at children in Key Stage 2. It can be used to help teach the science of forces and motion and the skills of scientific enquiry. During this workshop children will have the opportunity of working with a variety of materials to make a rocket. These are propelled using a unique electrically - controlled compressed air launcher!

Hands On Discovery Cases

Our latest workshop contains a range of unique and unusual items relating to the museum’s Second World War Aircraft collection. Each case tells its own story that children explore in order to produce a related piece of work. The workshop takes place in the inspirational atmosphere of the War in the Air Hangar.  The Discovery cases help develop interpretation and creative skills.
