Cosford at 80 Exhibition

3 April 2018 - 28 February 2019

Spitfire image with Spitfire serial numbers

During recent extreme weather the Museum was subject to localised floods and lightning strikes. Unfortunately this has meant that we are still trying to resolve the technical faults and damage caused. H1 was particularly affected and therefore we are unable to open the hangar whilst the work to rectify the situation continues. We are sorry for any inconvenience caused and please be reassured that we are doing all that we can to rectify the problem.

Cosford at 80 is our new exhibition on display in Hangar 1 and it has been created by a small team of personnel from RAF Cosford.

RAF Cosford has been part of the Shropshire countryside since building work began on hangars and accommodation in 1937.  Part of the pre-Second World War expansion plan, Cosford was formally opened on 15 July 1938 as a training and maintenance unit; since that time hundreds of thousands of RAF personnel have been trained on the Station and sent out to front line service around the world.

The exhibition looks at the history of some of the units that are currently based at RAF Cosford (No 1 Radio School, the Defence School of Photography and the RAF School of Physical Training). It also includes less well known elements of RAF Cosford’s history such Operation EXODUS (the repatriation of military personnel from prisoner of war camps across Europe and the Far East).

During the Second World War some 2,700 Spitfires were assembled at Cosford and the serial numbers of these aircraft have been captured and displayed in a Spitfire image.

The Exhibition is on display in the Temporary Exhibition Gallery.
