The Lightning JetWith the final stages of the Second World War came the first jet fighters; the British Gloster Meteor and the German Messerschmitt 262. Subsequent development was rapid and with Cold War Tensions increasing military planners became focused on nuclear warfare. At the time nuclear war heads could be delivered only by aircraft, necessitating the creation of fighters capable of destroying such aircraft before they reached their targets. In late 1947 Experimental Requirement 103 was issued for the creation of such an aircraft.
