Modelling fun for families at half term

Published on: 01 February 2018

Date: 17-23 February 2018

Time: 11.00am to 3.00pm

Cost: £3.00 per person / Admission to Museum FREE

February half term is just around the corner, so if you’re starting to plan how you’re going to entertain the children, look no further than the Royal Air Force Museum Cosford who are inviting families to participate in a fun model making activity.  Taking place from Saturday 17 to Friday 23 February, little aviators can choose from a vast number of Airfix kits to build, including a 1:72 Sopwith Pup which can be seen in our First World War in The Air Exhibition, Sea Harrier, Mitsubishi Zero or Albatros.

Airfix Make and Take

During ‘Airfix Make and Take’ week, children will build their models nestled amongst the Museum’s aircraft on display in Hangar 1.  Suitable for children aged 8+, you don’t have to be a skilled modeller to take part as staff and members from the Shropshire Scale Modellers will be there to lend a hand and to ensure visitors get the most from their modelling.  Plus, if you need a little inspiration on how to paint your Airfix model, take a look at some of the real aircraft on display in the Museum hangars.

If building an Airfix kit is too fiddly for your little ones, families with younger children can opt to assemble and decorate a wooden biplane.  Each kit contains pre-cut wooden pieces, plastic screw and easy to follow instructions.  To give your wooden kit the wow factor, the Museum will provide all the colours and accessories needed to help personalise your model including foam letters and coloured jewels!

Not only do participants get to take their models home, organisers are also giving modellers the chance to WIN an Airfix prize bundle worth over £75.  Packed with everything any young modeller could wish for including three Airfix sets with accessories and an Airfix quick build kit.  To enter the competition, hit ‘Like’ on the Museum’s Facebook page @rafmuseumcosford and tag us in a photo of your completed model kit by the end of the day on 25 February 2018.  The winner will be selected and the prize will be posted out so they can continue the model making fun at home. Plus, two lucky runners up will also receive an Airfix starter kit.  So if you think you can build the perfect Airfix kit or give your model the most creative makeover, why not give it a go!

Airfix Logo On Wednesday 21 February, there will be a free Airfix talk entitled Celebrating 100 years of the RAF in Airfix’, hosted by Simon Owen, Lead Researcher at Hornby Hobbies Ltd.  Focusing on some recent and yet to be announced new Airfix tooling, this talk will showcase how Airfix has researched its upcoming Wellington, Blenheim and other new kit releases.  These relate to this year’s RAF anniversary celebrations and there will also be some exclusive production images of the new kits.  Simon will be on hand to answer your questions at the end of the talk, so don’t miss out on this perfect opportunity to see what goes on behind the scenes at Airfix HQ.  The talk lasts approximately one hour.

RAF Museum Cosford Airfix Make and Take

RAF Museum Cosford Public Events Manager, Abi Betteridge said:

“Model making is one of our most popular activities and one that even adults love getting involved with. By offering both Airfix kits and wooden kits, the half term activity is suitable for families with children of all ages, plus we have a fantastic prize full of model making goodies up for grabs! This year we are offering the activity over the first weekend of the half term break, so we hope even more families will join us to take part.  Once again, we are delighted to have Simon Owen from Airfix on board for a special RAF Centenary themed talk which is suitable for Airfix enthusiasts of any age!  We are sure he will have plenty more Airfix ‘inside info’ to share with us again this half term.”

Tickets for the model making activity are available from the Visitor Centre on arrival or from the Museum Shop. The activity will run from 11.00am to 3.00pm each day and participation is just £3.00 per person.  All materials including glue, paints and brushes will be provided by the Museum (children will need to be supervised by an adult and may require assistance with the model making).  Then why not continue the fun at home…all participants will receive a 10% discount voucher to use on model kits for sale in the Museum shop.  Participants can also enjoy a special 10% off any purchase from the H Van café located in the National Cold War Exhibition, thanks to the Museum’s on site caterers Kudos, especially for modellers taking part in the half term activity.
