D-Day

Talk: Close air support on D-Day - Why it went wrong

This talk will focus on the development of close air support before and during the Second World War. It will look at what the War Office were expecting and what the Air Ministry were offering in the run up to D-Day. The influence Leigh-Mallory, Tedder, Montgomery and Coningham had on events will be covered. It will look at the missed opportunities on D-Day and how the use of air support improved as the Normandy campaign progressed.

Greg Baughen has been researching military aviation for over forty years. Retirement has provided an opportunity to turn this research into a series of books on British and French military aviation. He has published Blueprint for Victory, The Rise of the Bomber, The RAF in the Battle of France and the Battle of Britain, RAF on the Offensive, The Fairey Battle and The Rise and Fall of the French Air Force. He has also published articles in The Aviation Historian.  Air Britain's Aeromilitaria and RAF Air Power Review.

This talk will be followed by a Q&A

Tour of the Typhoon

Our Aircraft Access team will be there to share information about the aircraft and it’s story, and the personal stories of people who flew Typhoons during D-Day.

Flying Helmets: A Century of RAF Innovation

'Why do you need to put things on your head when flying?

In more than a century of powered flight, what about the headwear has changed...and what has stayed the same?

Focus on flying helmets of the Second World War: get behind the detail of protective helmets and try on some things you've never worn before!'
