Talk - Dr Sophy Antrobus (née Gardner)  'Difficult Birth: The Creation of the Royal Air Force in a Wartime Environment' 6.00pm - 6.45pm

The machines of the First World War tell the technological story of the rapid advances made in air power, but all was not well behind the scenes. In Britain, the pressures of war forced politicians to countenance creating an independent air force and the Royal Air Force came into official existence on 1 April 1918. The new force heralded the arrival of three-way inter-service competition and the RAF faced successive assaults on its independence post-war. This lecture will explore the very earliest months and years of the RAF and the significance of the RAF’s lack of history in the context of the period.

Dr Sophy Antrobus (née Gardner) lectures in history and international relations with the University of Portsmouth. She completed her PhD in the Department of History at the University of Exeter in November 2019 and is an Honorary Research Fellow with her former department. She has been researching the political fight for the RAF from its inception in 1917 to the end of the 1920s. Prior to her PhD, Sophy served for twenty years in the RAF, including on operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
