10:30 to 16:00 with a 1 hour lunch break.

Student's Work

Join us at the Royal Air Force Museum in February for a unique 1 day art course – Painting Portraits - People in Painting. This workshop will be led by artist Josephine Lyons.

People have inspired paintings for years; learn how to reveal stories about people and to capture a sense of presence in portraiture & how to make great realistic paintings. This course will teach you to portray what you see and help create further understanding of different visual languages in the arts.

The course will discuss the work of Stanley Spencer, Eric Kennington, Lucien Freud, Leonardo Da Vinci, and Picasso.  Learn how to use measurement, layering, the gaze, presence, tone, to how to develop composition to create great paintings.  The course will teach you how to use different materials; from acrylics, watercolours, charcoals to pencil.

The aims of the course are to:

  • Aim to help anyone who has an interest in the arts to make a great piece of work.
  • To provide affordable short courses
  • To help create a good platform for groups of new artists to meet
  • To help make great Art Accessible for all!
  • To create a fun and lively learning environment
  • To help build confidence in how to make a work of art
  • To help artists engage and access contemporary art discussions
  • To help develop knowledge of contemporary art, and art history
  • To build on the knowledge of techniques in contemporary art and art history to help develop new insights, and new commentary in new work.
  • To help artists at all levels to be inspired, from being a beginner and achieving a first great picture to helping more experienced artists with their professional development
