The Big Screen : Roald Dahl Family Favourites

27 - 29 August 2016

This year is the 100th anniversary of the birth of famous children's author Roald Dahl. A member of the RAF during the Second World War he started writing his tales between campaigns. To celebrate his wondrous imagination we will be showing 3 of his films for free during the August Bank Holiday weekend.

Matilda (1996) PG – 27 August 3pm

 

Maltida the movieMatilda Wormwood is a genius, but her parents, Harry and Zinnia (Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, respectively), ignore and mistreat her. At the age of four, she discovers the local library and walks there every day to read while her father is at work, her mother is playing bingo, and her older brother, Michael (Brian Levinson), is at school.

At age six-and-a-half, Matilda begins to lose patience with her parents, expressing a desire to go to school where she discovers that she has special powers to protect not only herself but the other students who suffer under the wicked Miss Trunchbull.


Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005) PG – 28 August 3pm

 

Charlie and the Chocolate FactoryCharlie Bucket (Freddie Highmore) is a kind and loving boy living in poverty with his parents (Noah Taylor and Helena Bonham Carter) and four bedridden grandparents. Down the street is Willy Wonka's (Johnny Depp) chocolate factory, which reopened after industrial espionage forced him into seclusion and to sack his employees. Charlie's Grandpa Joe (David Kelly) worked for Wonka before the termination.

Wonka announces a contest whereby children that find five Golden Tickets hidden in Wonka bars will be given a tour of the factory and one a chance to be presented with an unknown grand prize.

All hope is crushed when the last ticket is claimed in Russia. Charlie, on finding some money in the street, just intends to enjoy one chocolate bar when news breaks that the last ticket was fake. Charlie finds the bar he just bought has the last Golden Ticket setting Charlie on the adventure of a lifetime.
 

Fantastic Mr Fox (2009) – 29 August 3pm

 

The Fantastic Mister FoxWhile raiding Berk's Squab Farm, Mr. Fox and his wife Felicity trigger a fox trap and become caged.

Felicity reveals to Fox that she is pregnant and pleads with him to find a safer job if they escape. Two years later, the Foxes and their sullen son Ash are living in a hole.

Fox, now a newspaper columnist, moves the family into a better home in the base of a tree, ignoring the warnings of his lawyer Badger about how dangerous the area is for foxes.

The tree is located very close to facilities run by three farmers: Walter Boggis, Nathan Bunce, and Franklin Bean setting the family off on a series of adventures.

Each film will be shown daily for free in the lecture theatre at our London site but admission is by advance ticket only. You may obtain yours here

Please note that all children under 16 must be accompanied by a responsible adult, who should remain with the children, during the course of the film.
