Entering Squadron service in January 1944, this variant , equipping 15 squadrons of the 2nd Tactical Air Force shot down over 300 V1 flying bombs from June 1944. The Spitfire XIV was intended for high-altitude combat, and was very effective in this role; the Hendon aircraft is one of 957 of this variant built.
