Legacy

After the Second World War, the Black volunteers returned to the Caribbean and to Africa determined to change their homelands for the better. Those that returned to Britain from 1948 were also active, laying the foundations of the nation’s Black community.

During the war, the RAF developed into a progressive and highly effective multi-ethnic force, and the Service continues to welcome African-Caribbean volunteers today.
