The Royal Air Force Museum is a national museum, a Government non-departmental public body (NDPB) and a registered charity, with two sister sites at London and Midlands. Our purpose is to share the RAF story, past, present and future – using the stories of its people and our collections in order to engage, inform and inspire. Our Vision is to inspire everyone with the RAF story – the people who shape it and its place in our lives.

We have two public sites (London and Midlands) and a stored collection (Stafford). Our trading company and active fundraising supplement Grant in Aid which comes through the Ministry of Defence.

We are looking for a passionate intern to join the Exhibitions and Interpretation team, working in collaboration with the curatorial and learning teams, to develop storytelling and its presentation in a new exhibition and displays across our Midlands site, as well as conducting related audience research and evaluation.

This paid internship will provide a unique hands-on training opportunity in the museum profession, an overview of museum exhibition operations from the early planning stages through to developed design, as well as developing skills in project management.

You will learn about and contribute to the research, planning, and implementation of interpretive tools for the Museum’s exhibitions, including items such as display text and graphics, interactive experiences, trails, digital tours, and other techniques that encourage visitor engagement and learning.

The Intern will receive ‘Brilliant Basics’ online training in areas such as Health and Safety, Safeguarding, Equality and Diversity and Cyber Security as part of a full Museum induction programme. Additional formal training will include Project Management and MS Project software skills and there will be opportunities to attend external study days/seminars.

The ideal candidate will be passionate about storytelling, visitor experience and engagement which tackle barriers to inclusion and have an interest in pursuing or exploring a museum career. They will have an interest and skills in critical thinking, creative writing, and research. Applicants must be ready to think creatively in unfamiliar situations and be prepared for hands-on experience. A diplomatic and flexible disposition, with the ability to collaborate amongst a diverse group of people, is highly desired.
