The Royal Air Force Museum is a national museum, a Government non-departmental public body (NDPB) and a registered charity, with two sister sites at London and Cosford. Our purpose is to share the RAF story, past, present and future – using the stories of its people and our collections in order to engage, inform and inspire. Our overall vision is to inspire everyone with the RAF story – the people who shape it and its place in our lives.

Our unique Library collection includes a wide range of published material containing technical and historical information about military aircraft, aviation history, the RAF and associated air services. The holdings provide a valuable resource for staff and our audience including researchers.

The Librarian will be a key member of our Archive, Library and Research team working in support of the Museum’s inspirational Strategy 2030 and sector best practice as we start to develop a new Research Centre at our London site. Undertaking the full range of Library work, they will help to develop and look after the collection, as well as facilitate access to it through the department’s respected information service and engagement activities. There will also be the opportunity to undertake research contributing to our Research programme.

The successful candidate will have demonstrable experience of working with library collections and making them accessible to audiences. With strong organisational skills and the ability to multi-task to agreed deadlines, they will also have good IT and communication skills. Experience of working in teams and with volunteers will be essential as will experience of using collections management databases. A good knowledge of RAF history will be an advantage.

The post will be based at our London site. Travel between the Museum sites will be necessary, and some overseas travel may be required.
