Medals, from left to right: Victoria Cross, Distinguished Flying Cross, 1939–1945 Star with Battle of Britain clasp, Aircrew Europe Star, Burma Star, 1939–1945 Defence Medal, 1939–1945 War Medal.Battle of Britain pilot James Nicolson was awarded RAF Fighter Command’s only Victoria Cross. During a mission to deflect an incoming raid over Southampton, his Hawker Hurricane Mk I was hit by four cannon shells from an enemy aircraft. Despite sustaining serious injuries, and with his Hurricane ablaze, he continued to pursue and shoot down a Messerschmitt Bf 110.

FAQs

How much does an adoption cost?

If you choose to pay monthly, either by Direct Debit or card, you can adopt from as little as £2 a month. If you prefer to make a one-off donation, adoptions start at £25.

Monthly donations help us to plan ahead and develop our exciting future projects, as we have regular, reliable donations coming in

How long does my adoption run for?

For monthly donors, your adoption will continue until you choose to cancel. For any one-off donations, adoptions will run for a year.

How do I give an adoption as a gift?

When completing the form, there will be a section that asks if your adoption is a gift. Just tick that, and then fill in the box with the name and address of the person you are gifting your adoption to, and we will make sure that they recieve their pack!

What does my adoption support with?

Your adoption could be used across a number of projects or work across the RAF Museum, including conservation, research, exhibitions, learning programmes, and the day-to-day costs of running our Museums including maintaining our historical hangars and welcoming our visitors.
