Forces in STEM LogoThe inaugural Forces in STEM event will be taking place at RAF Museum Cosford on 29 September 2021, in partnership with RAF Youth & STEM and supported by Learn By Design.

Join us at the museum for an action packed day of hands on activities. We are joined by a host of wonderful exhibitors, including the likes of Leonardo, Raytheon, Rolls Royce, BAE Systems, Meggitt, Thales and many more!

Open to students in the following year groups: Years 5 & 6 and Years 7 & 8. To book your place click here!

Schools and home educators across the West Midlands are invited to come along for an interactive day of all things STEM. This event will feature the very best of the region, from the fantastic work carried out by the companies and institutions that are innovating, researching and manufacturing across the STEM spectrum.

Forces in STEM Challenges

Every fortnight a different exhibitor will be providing a STEM challenge for students to complete either at school or at home. These challenges will include an introductory video, an accompanying resource/activity sheet, and finally a solution video.

Final STEM Challenge - Royal Air Force

Welcome to the Royal Air Force ‘Forces in STEM’ Challenge. 47Sqn at RAF Brize Norton are responsible for the task of delivering personnel and equipment by air using the C130J Hercules aircraft; but sometimes they have to do this without landing! Your task is to design and build an effective air dispatch system to safely land some precious cargo onto a hard surface from height. Have fun, get creative and we can’t wait to see what you come up with.

STEM Challenge 7 - Raytheon

Welcome to Raytheon UK’s mini Quadcopter Challenge! We’ve partnered with the Royal Air Force Museum as part of the Forces in STEM series and have an exciting challenge for you to help us solve an engineering problem with our quadcopters. We would like for you to help us redesign a guard for each of the 4 propellers on our quadcopter. All details can be found in the activity booklet provided! Enjoy and good luck!

Put your coding and robotic skills to the test in the VEXcode VR Challenge! Use either Scratch blocks or Python text to program a virtual robot to collect the disks and place them into the correct colour goal. How many disks can you score?

Junk Modelling Challenge

For the first activity we are setting you a Junk modelling challenge. This is a creative activity where students will research, design and create an aircraft using recyclable materials.

The second activity will see students making paper helicopters. Once the helicopters have been made, work through the questions on the worksheet to complete the activity.

STEM Stories Activities

The next activity is made up of several parts, based around two short stories written by children's author Tom Palmer:

The RAF Museum’s writer in residence – children’s author Tom Palmer – has collaborated with the RAF Youth and STEM Team to write two short stories set in the Second World War. Based around famous inventions and their innovators during the wartime period, both stories are accompanied by STEM activities written by the RAF

Story 1 - The Letter

There are two activities for you to complete based on 'The Letter'

The first will see students building their own Gosport tubes.

The second activity is a Maths worksheet based around the world famous Spitfire.

STEM Challenge 4 - BAE Systems

BAE Systems STEM Challenge Introduction

At BAE Systems we work on exciting, world leading, engineering and deliver cutting edge technology. PHASA-35 is an ultra-lightweight solar powered Unmanned Air Vehicle (UAV) that has the potential to remain airborne for up to a year, pushing the boundaries of aviation technology. Watch our apprentice videos with Travis and complete our PHASA-35 worksheets to learn more about this incredible aircraft.
