To commemorate 85th anniversary of the Battle of Britain we will be offering visitors each day a free 10-minute talk about a little known aspect of the Battle of Britain.
Fighter by Day Bomber by Night
In this is short talk we focus on Bomber Command’s involvement in the Battle of Britain with one of the aircraft featured in the talk being the Hampden, a recent addition to our collection in London.
LADA and the Dowding System
During the Battle of Britain RAF Fighter Command relied heavily on the “Dowding System” (named after Air Chief Marshal Sir Hugh Dowding Commander-in-chief of RAF Fighter Command). In 1940 this was the world’s only integrated Air Defence System and proved to be effective in helping the RAF overcome the formidable Luftwaffe (German Air Force). This talk examines how the process was influenced by the London Air Defence Area (LADA) during the 1st World War.
The Gloster Gladiator
The Gloster Gladiator was the RAF’s last biplane fighter and the first to feature an enclosed cockpit for the pilot. Deliveries began in 1937, with Gladiators continuing to serve in the early years of the Second World War. However, it had been rendered almost obsolete by newer monoplane designs such as the Hurricane even as it was being introduced into service.
The Battle of Britain Memorial Lace
In this short talk we examine the Battle of Britain Memorial Lace on display in Hangar 5, part of our Battle of Britain display, and look at the beautiful work and skilled lace-makers that created this unique memorial to ‘The Few’.
No need to book. Posters will be on display in Hangar 3,4,5 Reception detailing what tours are taking place and when. Just drop by.
