This Easter the RAF Museum Midlands is hosting a huge STEM-based event called Space Race and Fly!

We are bringing back all our favourites for this event, from the explosive Volatile History of Chemistry science show, to the Space Odyssey Planetarium and Stargazing Evenings. More detail will be added very soon, keep watching this page for more info.

 

A Volatile History of Chemistry

Date: 23 + 24 March and 2 + 3 April
Timings: 10:30am, 1:00pm and 3:00pm
Price: £7.50 adults, £5.00 children, £22.50 family
Show Length: 50 Minutes

An interactive time traveling extravaganza, a brilliantly mind-boggling science show delivered by the STEM Response Team from the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE) at the University of Wolverhampton.

Using audience participation and spectacular chemistry demonstrations you will go on a explosive journey through the history and important concepts from the world of chemistry in a way you have never experienced before. This exciting and explosive interactive science show will change the way you will see Chemistry forever.

This show is suitable for those aged 7 and upwards.

Please note, this show contains loud sounds/bangs throughout the performance and whilst we will make you aware when these are going to occur this show may not be suitable for those who are sensitive to these noises.

 

Mobile Planetarium: Space Odyssey

A spectacular 3D experience for all ages!

After it’s popularity in October, we’re bringing back our huge mobile planetarium, The Galileo Dome, where you can watch a fantastic film all about space flight and feel like you’re really flying through the stars.

This immersive and inspirational experience will take visitors through the history of space exploration. There are three different shows tailored for different ages. Please select the one best suited for your family. More details below.

The space show is £7.50 for adults and £5.00 for children. Don’t miss out and book your tickets now.

Session 1:  10:30am – 11:00am (30 mins) – session for FAMILIES WITH YOUNGER CHILDREN (6 and under), including an animated adventure with Astronaut George, exploring the planets of the solar system, plus the Easter night skies

Session 2:  11:30am – 12:15pm (45 mins) – session for FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN AGED 6+, exploring the history of space exploration, the latest news from space, the solar system and wider universe as well as the Easter night skies (minimum age 6)

Session 3:  12:45pm – 1:15pm (30 mins) – session for FAMILIES WITH YOUNGER CHILDREN (6 and under), including an animated adventure with Astronaut George, exploring the planets of the solar system, plus the Easter night skies

Session 4:  2:00pm – 2:45pm (45 mins) – session for FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN AGED 6+, exploring the history of space exploration, the latest news from space, the solar system and wider universe, as well as the Easter night skies (minimum age 6)

Session 5:  3:30pm – 4:30pm (60 mins) – session for FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN AGED 10+ AND ADULTS including content at greater depth, exploring the latest news and discoveries in space, the search for alien life, our place in the solar system and wider universe, as well as the Easter night skies (minimum age 9/10)

Stargazing Evenings

Date: 23, 24 and 27 March
Timings: 6.00pm to 9.00pm
Price: £7.50 adults, £5.00 children
Explore the skies above at our stargazing evening!

We are thrilled to be hosting the Shropshire Astronomical Society who are running two fabulous Stargazing Evenings.

In this exclusive out-of-hours session you can explore the stars above the RAF Museum Midlands and learn how to use a telescope and understand the constellations above us. The Stargazing evening will run from 6.00pm to 9.00pm.

We will be providing some telescopes for this event however you are more than welcome to bring your own telescope/binoculars to this event if you wish and learn how to use them with some expert guidance.

You will also be able to take some time to explore the National Cold War Exhibition after dark and see our amazing collection come to life in the dark. Soak in the Vulcan, Victor and Valiant without the crowds and in the atmospheric evening light.

In the event of inclement weather an interactive talk about star gazing will be held in the lecture theatre.

Although this evening is open to all we would suggest a minimum age of 7.

Please note, the Museum will close at 5.00pm and all buildings, including the National Cold War Exhibition, will be closed between 5.00pm until 5.45pm.

Apollo 11 Academy – Space Race show

Date: 29, 30 and 31 March
Timings: 11:00am, 1.00pm and 3:00pm
Price: £7.50 adults, £5.00 children
Show Length: 40 minutes

It’s the 1960s and the race to the Moon is on! What were the problems for the scientists and astronauts? Just how did humans work out how to get to the Moon?

Blast off this Easter and travel from the Earth to the Moon! This interactive show is perfect for all the family. Located in our lecture theatre in the National Cold War Exhibition, it’s 40 minutes of fun and excitement as we journey to the Moon.

Suggested age of 5-12 but everyone welcome.

Space Crafts with Garry

Date: 29 March to 1st April
Timings: 10:30, 12:00, 13:30, 15:00
Price: £5 children, £5 adult
Activity Length: 1 hour

Join local award-winning artist Garry Jones, from Off our Trolley Arts for a fun and messy space-based craft session for the whole family. Make a fabulous UFO, a rocket or something of your own invention to fly around the museum. All materials and expert tuition provided.

Suggested age of 5-12 but everyone welcome.

 

Lego Balloon Dragsters

Date: 27th and 28th March, 1st, 6th and 7th April
Timings: 10:30, 11:00, 11:30, 13:30, 14:00, 14:30 and 15:00

Price: FREE
Activity Length: 30 minutes

In this fun, FREE, workshop you will build and race your own Lego dragster powered by a balloon. All materials are provided and all ages welcome. Please book one ticket per child. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
