The new Playground at the RAF Museums London

The #summer holidays may be over, but our #playground at our #London site is as popular as ever with #preschoolers thanks to the continuing warm weather.

Our young visitors love exploring the amazing replica #aircraft we have created for them: the iconic #Spitfire, the legendary #VickersVimy, the heroic #SeaKing helicopter, not forgetting our #Tornado slide.

They love even more scrambling over our fantastic Watch Tower climbing frame which is a mini-version of the Grahame-White Watch Tower, just across the way.

Please watch this short video about our playground and after doing so bring your young #aviators to explore it. We are open daily from 10am. Admission is free.

Sqr Ldr Edward Smith at the RAF Museum London

Squadron Leader Edward Smith, DFC, visited the RAF Museum #London with his wife to view his silhouette which is located next to our McDonnell Douglas Phantom FGR2.

Edward dreamt of flying in the RAF since the age of 10. He joined the Service in 1976 and was selected to serve with the US Air Force, flying the F16 jet in a regular operational unit, as part of a long-standing exchange programme between both Services. After the Iraqi invasion of #Kuwait in 1990, he flew 26 combat missions during Operation Desert Storm alongside his USAF colleagues.

He was subsequently awarded the American Distinguished Flying Cross and then the British DFC.

On returning to the UK, his #Tornado squadron was the first RAF fast jet squadron to fly over eastern Germany following reunification.

London’s latest innovation

One of the new wonderful innovations we are introducing as part of our grand re-opening are Alinkers. We would like all our visitors to enjoy every bit of our newly re-landscaped site but recognise that for some walking for long periods of time may be tiring. Therefore, we are introducing these easy-to-operate devices which you sit on and steer like a bicycle while walking in a very comfortable sitting position.

Alinkers are distributed in the UK by Pyxis Edinburgh. We are the first UK Museum to provide them for our visitors. These are available for use, free of charge.

Admission to our London site is also free.
