The 1934 Isle of Man Race started in sunshine, but on arrival at Blackpool the weather deteriorated rapidly and many competitors were reluctant to start on the final leg across the Irish Sea in low cloud and heavy rain. However, Alex and his father set out optimistically, and made landfall at the island’s capital, Douglas, ahead of the field to win the event in their de Havilland Leopard Moth G-ACLO.
