John Gulson

John Gulson GM 1912 – 1992
Flight Engineer, Second Officer, ATA

John Gulson joined the ATA as a Flight Engineer in 1942. He had previously served with the Royal Tank Corps and worked for the Royal Aircraft Establishment.

In June 1945 a Halifax bomber crashed at the ATA’s White Waltham headquarters. Unbeknown to staff, the aircraft was fully loaded with bombs making it highly dangerous.

For his part in the successful rescue of the crew John Gulson was awarded the George Medal for bravery.
