As the ATA ventured overseas, their aircraft were equipped with radios for the first time. New technology meant extra training for the pilots but they could finally communicate during a flight.

Originally the overseas flight was allocated the call sign ‘Lost Child’ but this was soon changed to ‘Ferdinand’. As a nod to the new call sign, overseas Anson’s were adorned with pictures of Disney’s “Ferdinand the Bull”.
