Cobham and the King

Sir Samuel Hoare, the Secretary of State for Air, invited Alan Cobham to the home of civil aviation in Westminster, London to tell him that King George V had decided to offer him a knighthood.

When Alan Cobham arrived at Buckingham Palace the King proclaimed ‘Congratulations, Cobham, this is a wonderful affair. Tell me all about it’.

After Alan Cobham had told the King all about his epic adventure the King said, ‘We have a lot of gentlemen outside, Cobham, but I want to tell you that this is a real knighthood.’

Sir Alan Cobham had achieved all this at the remarkably young age of 32.
